The 10th Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard visited
Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to honor the football team during a school-wide pep rally. The Sabercats, who won the Division III state championships, also finished ranked No. 52 nationally for the 2014 season. The announcement was made by MaxPreps, a California-based company that ranks more than 16,000 varsity high school football teams.
Saguaro High School Sabercats rocked the Williams Fields High School with the score of 45-21 for the Division III state title. The team ended the season undefeated 14-0 record. This is the 7th Division III State Championship title in nine years. The Sabercats were being honored by Staff Sergeant Daryl Harringer, Staff Sergeant George Kendall and Sergeant First Class Daniel Cardiel of the Arizona Army National Guard and the team would receive the Army National Guard national ranking trophy. This was the second ‘Minuteman' award Saguaro has received; the first in 2008 where they ranked No. 53 in the nation.
The presentation took place during a pep rally where nearly 1,500 students packed the gymnasium. The Sabercats Varsity Football team was called to center court for the presentation after the cheer squad had everyone roaring. Tim Bolen of MaxPreps introduced the Tour of Champions presentation and explained the MaxPreps Computer Rankings. Tim then introduced Staff Sergeant Harringer, who was on the court shaking all the football team member's hands.
SSG Harringer came out with a strong firm voice as he described what it means to be part of a team, a family really, and a winning team at that. He congratulated the team, the coach and then continued with everyone sitting in gymnasium. He then presented the Army National Guard national ranking trophy to Coach Jason Mohns. After accepting the ‘Minuteman' trophy, Coach Mohns turned towards the team and raised the trophy above his head. Coach Mohns thanked each of his players, commending them on how they came together and how each player stepped up when they needed to. He then handed the team the award and stepped to the side as they celebrated. Later, Coach Mohns said, "Looking forward to the new challenges, great football teams, and new opportunities," he explained about moving divisions. After the presentation, the players took pictures with the trophy.
Congratulations to the Saguaro Football team on their state title and national ranking!
