1A Carolina recap Sept. 26, 2012
Julius Murphy and Karon Alston provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Red Springs. The connection was good for 75 yards, the longest such play in 1A Carolina this season.
Goldsboro extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Red Devils, 34-7. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.
Goldsboro's dynamic duo of Murphy and Alston proved tough for Red Springs to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Murphy threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns and Alston had 127 yards receiving. Joseph Baker helped Goldsboro's passing attack out by catching eight balls for 53 yards.
Julio Mora was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 240 yards on 30 carries as North Duplin bested George Coltharp's team. Teammate Tyler Royal added to the ground attack by rushing for 200 yards.
The Cougars' Murphy and Baker have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 1A Carolina in both passing and receiving yards. Murphy has thrown for 764 yards this season, while Baker, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 24 catches for 223 yards. The Rebels' Royal leads the league in rushing yards with 852.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place North Duplin takes on second place Goldsboro. North Duplin beat Lejeune last week, while Goldsboro defeated the Red Devils.
There should be lots of points scored when Hugh Martin's team and the Cougars face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Rebels comes in having scored 160 this season, while Goldsboro has scored 139. North Duplin scored 42 points last week as it bested the Devil Pups.
The Cougars moved up to 89 from 127 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Goldsboro was able to make the jump by beating Red Springs 34-7.
