The Lawson Lightning will face off against the McGavock Raiders at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Lawson has given up an average of 12 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
On Wednesday, Lawson came up short against Pope John Paul II and fell 12-7.
Makenzie Cotton and Joi Stewart did some serious damage despite the final result: Cotton scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4, while Stewart scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Kalissa Smith was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask McGavock). Everything went their way against Whites Creek on Tuesday as McGavock made off with a 23-3 victory. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Raiders with their most commanding win of the season.
Amanda Toth made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-low in walks (one). She was even better at the plate, scoring four runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, McGavock got a massive performance out of Riley Phillips, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances. The dominant performance gave Phillips a new career-high in runs. Another player making a difference was Jasmine Dahl, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
McGavock was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Lawson's defeat dropped their record down to 1-3. As for McGavock, the win got them back to even at 3-3.
Thursday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Lawson has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .446. However, it's not like McGavock struggles in that department as they've averaged .528. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lawson came out on top in a nail-biter against McGavock in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, sneaking past 6-5. Does Lawson have another victory up their sleeve, or will McGavock turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
