The Covenant Christian Cougars won the last time they faced the Pantego Christian Panthers, and things went their way on Tuesday too. Covenant Christian took down Pantego Christian 69-54. Given Covenant Christian's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 160th, while Pantego Christian is ranked 723rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Covenant Christian was led to victory by AJ Guerra and Aaron Turner. Guerra almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine rebounds, while Turner scored 24 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Turner has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Noah Hill, who scored eight points.
Pantego Christian's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Evan Jackson, who scored 12 points along with two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Tristan Brown, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds.
Covenant Christian's victory bumped their record up to 21-6. As for Pantego Christian, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 15-16 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Covenant Christian is on the road again on Friday and plays Trinity Christian at 7:00 p.m. on February 9th. Trinity Christian is coming into the game with 11 straight wins at home, meaning Covenant Christian will have to defend against a squad hungry for a win. As for Pantego Christian, they will head out on the road to face off against Trinity Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Pantego Christian is facing Trinity Christian at the right time seeing as Trinity Christian is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
