Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in prep basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2023-24 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Sharron Young of
Morgantown is the 2023-24 West Virginia MaxPreps Player of the Year. The 6-foot senior guard led the Mohigans to a 26-1 record and their third consecutive Class AAAA state championship.
For the season, Young averaged 21.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 5.9 steals per contest while shooting over 40 percent from 3-point range.
In a 35-32 overtime victory against Spring Mills (Martinsburg) in the state title game, Young tallied 11 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists. He also knocked down the go-ahead 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining in the extra period to give the Mohigans a 33-32 lead.
Young is Morgantown's all-time leading scorer with 1,496 points and helped the program go 76-7 over his final three seasons.

Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released April 10.
