On Saturday, the Franklin Community Grizzly Cubs faced the New Palestine Dragons in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Franklin Community strolled past New Palestine with points to spare, taking the game 81-67. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Franklin Community's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Micah Davis led the charge by scoring 26 points along with seven assists and five rebounds. Davis is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games he's played. Kolt Nelson was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds.
New Palestine's loss came despite strong showings from Julius Gizzi and Moses Haynes. Gizzi dropped a double-double on 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Haynes went 6 for 10 from beyond the arc en route to 21 points and 3 assists. That was a full 37.3% of New Palestine's points, marking the fifth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brady Armstrong, who scored eight points.
The win makes it two in a row for Franklin Community and bumps their season record up to 12-2. As for New Palestine, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Franklin Community and Martinsville will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 26th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Martinsville has now lost eight straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 16. As for New Palestine, they will head out on the road to square off against Lawrence North at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Lawrence North will be coming into the matchup with an undefeated record on the line.
