Softball Recap: Marquez Sets Scoring Season-High Against Elizabeth

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Marquez). They put the hurt on the Elizabeth Bulldogs with a sharp 24-1 victory on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Gladiators, who have now won 13 contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

Kamilah Amezcua was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.3 strikeouts per game. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple.

In other batting news, Rosalia Reyes was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Emily Castro was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.

Marquez kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in four consecutive games.

Marquez pushed their record up to 16-1 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Elizabeth, they are on a 20-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-8.

Coming up, Marquez will venture away from home to take on South Gate at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Rams have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.95 runs per game on average), something the Gladiators will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Elizabeth, they will square off against Sotomayor at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bulldogs are facing the Wolves at the right time seeing as the Wolves are stuck on a three-game losing streak.
