After a string of nine wins, the Cape Fear Colts's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. The match between Cape Fear and North Pitt wasn't particularly close, with Cape Fear falling 70-53. Cape Fear found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and rack up eight fewer assists than your opponent.
When it comes to explaining why Cape Fear lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jayda Angel. Despite the final result, she scored 29 points along with seven assists and six steals. That was a full 54.7% of Cape Fear's points, marking the tenth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Kayia Starling was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with three blocks and two steals.
North Pitt got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Zamareya Jones out in front who scored 21 points along with seven assists. Jones has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Jordan Speller, who scored 20 points along with two steals.
Cape Fear's defeat ended a 12-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-1. As for North Pitt, their win was their 21st straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-3.
Cape Fear won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Jack Britt at 6:00 p.m. on January 16th. Hopefully Jack Britt focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 last Friday. As for North Pitt, they will head out on the road to take on West Craven at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. West Craven will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 63rd, while North Pitt is ranked 12th).
