Auburn and Gillespie are an even 3-3 against one another since March of 2016, but likely not for long. Auburn will venture away from home to face off against Gillespie at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Auburn took a 15-run loss the last time they faced off against Carlinville, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Auburn won by a run and slipped past Carlinville 5-4. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Trojans.
Peyton Campbell made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Tucker Dennis was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Evan Kessler, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Gillespie was not the first on the board last Friday, but they got there more often. They skirted past Carrollton 13-11. The victory continues a trend for the Miners in their matchups with the Hawks: they've now won four in a row.
Like Auburn, Gillespie also got a great game from a two-way player: Brody Shaw. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Shaw was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-5.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Carson Hailstone, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with four RBI and one double. Owen Pau was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Gillespie now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Auburn, they now also have a winning record of 2-1.
Auburn suffered a grim 18-10 defeat to Gillespie in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can Auburn avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
