Eagle Valley is 9-1 against Steamboat Springs since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Devils will host the Sailors at 3:00 p.m. Eagle Valley has given up an average of 9.8 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Eagle Valley will bounce into Wednesday's match after beating Rifle, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Devils narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Bears 13-12. Considering the Devils' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Eagle Valley got a massive performance out of Xander DeHerrera, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-5. That's the most hits DeHerrera has posted since back in March of 2024. Ricardo Gutierrez was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
DeHerrera wasn't the only one making solid contact: Eagle Valley kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's a new trend for the Devils: they were averaging 5.4 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 8.8.
Meanwhile, Steamboat Springs was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They lost 14-6 to Glenwood Springs. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last seven times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Jonathan Nicoles and Rickey Hernandez stepped up to the plate in a big way. Nicoles scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3, while Hernandez scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Tanner Cobb, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Eagle Valley's victory bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Steamboat Springs, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Eagle Valley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Steamboat Springs struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Eagle Valley was able to grind out a solid win over Steamboat Springs in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, winning 9-6. Will the Devils repeat their success, or do the Sailors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
