Two dominant signal callers in Jonah Lubno and Malachi Wilt are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Campo Verde Coyotes will welcome the Verrado Vipers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Friday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Campo Verde beat Arizona College Prep 32-27.
The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Lubno and Evan Heinrich. Lubno had a great game and rushed for 88 yards and three TDs. Meanwhile, Heinrich was balling out in the loss, throwing for 311 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 14.1 yards per attempt.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Campo Verde's defense and their four sacks. Jadyn Kinyanjui refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Verrado). They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat Kellis 69-18. The result was nothing new for the Vipers, who have now won five contests by 25 points or more so far this season.
Campo Verde better keep an eye on Immanuel Perry. He was instrumental in Verrado's win, rushing for 41 yards and one score, while also catching one TD. Airen Lively also helped out with an impressive 84 receiving yards.
Verrado didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Kellis to a completion percentage of just 25%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from four players: Blake Bliss, Anthony Morales, Jairius Handley, and Elijah Baltazar, who each logged one passes deflected. Verrado wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 62.1%.
Verrado didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. Aidan Bineyard picked up that interception and then proceeded to rub salt in the wound by taking it back the other way for a touchdown. He got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
The win made it two in a row for Verrado and bumps their season record up to 6-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.0 points over those games. As for Campo Verde, their win bumped their record up to 6-4.
The upcoming game will be a clash of competing strengths. Campo Verde has deployed a run-first offense that has averaged 153.6 rushing yards a game. Meanwhile, Verrado has preferred to attack from the air: they average 308.3 passing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Friday? There's only one way to find out.
Everything came up roses for Campo Verde against Verrado in their previous meeting back in September of 2019, as the squad secured a 42-0 victory. Do the Coyotes have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Vipers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
