Even though the Floyd Central Jaguars scored an imposing 61 points on Saturday, the Rowan County Vikings still came out on top. Rowan County took their match against Floyd Central 71-61. For Rowan County, this counts as revenge for the 51-41 defeat Floyd Central walked away with the last time they faced one another back in January of 2023.
Rowan County got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Dashawn Watson out in front who scored 20 points along with eight rebounds. The game was Watson's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brayden Mirus, who scored 16 points along with five rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Floyd Central lost, one person who can't be blamed is Ronnie Samons. Despite the final result, he scored 29 points along with eight rebounds. Those 29 points set a new season-high mark for him. Chris Spriggs was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Floyd Central were working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rowan County only racked up seven assists.
Rowan County's victory bumped their record up to 9-6. As for Floyd Central, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-7.
Rowan County will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Lewis County at 7:30 p.m. on January 16th. As for Floyd Central, they will head out on the road to face off against Prestonsburg at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Prestonsburg is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games.
