Despite the defeat, Sweetwater had strong showings from Jose Quintero, who picked up 210 receiving yards and two TDs, and Caiden Ortiz, who threw for 308 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Mustangs are 2-1 when Quintero posts two or more receiving touchdowns, but 1-4 otherwise.
Meanwhile, Breckenridge played in-conference for the first time on Saturday and got just the result they were looking for. They snuck past Comanche with a 26-22 win.
Sweetwater better keep an eye on Jaime Cruz. He was instrumental in Breckenridge's win, rushing for 156 yards and a pair of scores. Those 156 rushing yards gave Cruz a new career-high.
Breckenridge's run defense was locked in: Comanche could only muster 2.6 yards per carry. The team can thank Hayden Mendoza for the heroic effort on defense: he. Breckenridge's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 5.2.
Breckenridge didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Ryan Waller.
Breckenridge's victory bumped their record up to 3-5. As for Sweetwater, their loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 3-5.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Sweetwater has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 164.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Breckenridge struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 149.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Sweetwater against Breckenridge in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, as the team secured a 43-13 win. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Buckaroos turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
