The York Dukes will head out on the road to take on the Leyden Eagles at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
York was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against Berwyn/Cicero Morton on Tuesday. York's pitcher stepped up to hand Berwyn/Cicero Morton a 14-0 shutout. The Dukes not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since May 8, 2024.
Taylor McMillen tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out ten over 4.2 innings pitched. Furthermore, she didn't allow a single walk, the first time she has blanked an opponent since back in May of 2024.
On the hitting side, Emily McNichols and Lillianah (Lilly) Burda did most of the damage at the plate: McNichols scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-2, while Burda scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Myka Matykiewicz was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
York was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .412. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Berwyn/Cicero Morton only posted a batting average of .176.
Meanwhile, Leyden put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They walked away with a 7-2 win over DePaul College Prep.
Abigail Cortez made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Arianna Gallo, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Gianna Olan, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one RBI.
Leyden's record now sits at 3-0. As for York, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
York couldn't quite get it done against Leyden in their previous meeting back in March of 2022 as they fell 6-3. Can York avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
