After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Salpointe Catholic, the Sahuaro Cougars were happy to have found some success on Thursday. They came out on top against Pueblo by a score of 59-50. That's another feather in the cap for Sahuaro, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Leading Sahuaro to victory were Ny'Anza Brown and Cassandra Coolidge. Brown scored 15 points along with nine rebounds, while Coolidge scored 26 points along with eight rebounds. That's the first time this season that Coolidge pulled down eight or more rebounds. Kristen Valdez was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with two steals.
Despite the loss, Pueblo had strong showings from America Cazares, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten rebounds, and Madison Williams, who scored seven points along with seven steals. That was a full 40% of Pueblo's points, marking the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Espinoza, who scored five points along with 12 rebounds and two steals.
Pueblo struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Sahuaro racked up ten assists.
Sahuaro is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 17-7 record this season. As for Pueblo, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 12-10.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sahuaro won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Buena at 7:00 p.m. on January 19th. As for Pueblo, they will head out on the road to face off against Canyon del Oro at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
