Sanderson (Raleigh, N.C.) grabbed the lead when
Matt Koehler ran for a touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter and held on to upset
Heritage (Wake Forest, N.C.) 20-14 on Saturday. The score was the final lead change in a back-and-forth contest that featured two lead swaps.
Heritage pulled ahead on a touchdown run by
Blake Walters, and subsequently went into halftime leading 7-0. The Spartans took the lead to win the game on a touchdown run by Koehler in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring seven points in the third, Sanderson still trailed by seven points going into the fourth quarter. But 13 points in the fourth helped SHS pull out the victory.
The Raleigh school entered the contest giving up 21.0 points per game this year. A defensively strong the Spartans kept HHS right around the 16.2 points it had been averaging per game.
The victory was a completely different match up compared to last season's game between these two teams, which the Wake Forest school took, 55-7.
The victory was a step in the right direction for Sanderson, which was coming off a 34-27 defeat at the hands of Wakefield in its previous game. The defeat comes as a step back for Heritage, which notched a 30-7 victory over Leesville Road in its previous outing. The loss ended Heritage's three-game winning streak.
Sanderson (3-3) will play a 4A Conference 11 game against Leesville Road next week, while Heritage (4-2) will take on Enloe also in a 4A Conference 11 game.
