It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Southwest Roughriders ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They managed a 53-48 victory over Cheylin. The win was just what Southwest needed coming off of a 59-39 defeat in their prior contest.
Southwest's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Houston Billeter, who scored 22 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Nathan Rippe, who scored 11 points along with eight steals and five assists.
Defeat or not, Cheylin got some senior leadership from Pablo Bermudez and Logan McCarty. Bermudez scored 17 points along with seven steals, while McCarty. scored 15 points along with two steals. McCarty hasn't dropped below two steals for seven straight games. Victor Hernandez was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Southwest's win ended a six-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-10. As for Cheylin, their loss dropped their record down to 7-3.
Southwest will face off against Cambridge at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cambridge presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Southwest in Nebraska (Cambridge is ranked 98th, while Southwest is ranked 228th). As for Cheylin, they will head out on the road to square off against Hi-Plains at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Hi-Plains focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 36 on Tuesday.
