Highlands and Campbell County are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2016, but likely not for long. The Bluebirds will challenge the Camels at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Highlands is coming into the contest hot, having won their last 15 games.
Highlands proved they can win big on Wednesday (they won by eight) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 win over Notre Dame Academy.
Alli Meyers was excellent, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double. Layla Zepf was another key player, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Campbell County waltzed into their matchup on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Cougars, sneaking past 7-5.
Hope Hamilton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Faith Whitford, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Josie Feebeck, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases.
Campbell County hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least three batters in three consecutive games.
Highlands pushed their record up to 22-5-1 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Campbell County, their record is now 14-4.
Campbell County's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Friday. Highlands has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.6 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Campbell County, though, as they've been averaging only 3.1 strikeouts. Will Highlands keep running through batters, or will the Camels buck the trend?
Highlands was able to grind out a solid victory over Campbell County when the teams last played back in March, winning 3-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bluebirds since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
