Wesson has gone a perfect 10-0 against Franklin County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Cobras will be playing at home against the Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. Wesson's pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so Franklin County's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
The home team had won the previous five meetings between Wesson and Florence, and Florence kept the tradition alive. The Cobras fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 8-7 on Friday.
Wesson saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maddie Sanders, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI and two doubles. Another was Preslee Newman, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Franklin County). They never let Port Gibson get on the board and left with a 23-0 victory on Tuesday. The win was familiar territory for the Bulldogs, who have now won four matchups in a row.
Joy Woodard made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. Woodard was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Greyonne Queen, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Jhalayah Tillman was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.
Franklin County's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-6. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.3 runs over those games. As for Wesson, their loss dropped their record down to 17-5.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Wesson has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .451. However, it's not like Franklin County struggles in that department as they've averaged .476. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wesson took their victory against Franklin County when the teams last played back in March by a conclusive 11-0 score. Will the Cobras repeat their success, or do the Bulldogs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
