If the Iola Mustangs were feeling good off their 56-27 takedown of the Prairie View Buffalos back in December of 2023, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Iola took a 63-45 bruising from Fort Scott on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Iola can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 123rd, while Fort Scott is ranked seventh).
Iola's loss came despite strong showings from Landon Weide and Cortland Carson. Weide scored 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals, while Carson scored 13 points. The matchup was Carson's seventh in a row with at least ten points. Lucas Maier was another key contributor, scoring four points along with seven rebounds.
Iola has not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-3 record this season. As for Fort Scott, the victory for they keeps them at an undefeated 6-0.
Iola will look to defend their home court on Friday against Osawatomie at 7:00 p.m. Hopefully Osawatomie focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 two weeks ago. As for Fort Scott, they will head out on the road to face off against Labette County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Labette County comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
