The Juan Diego Catholic Soaring Eagle fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Hunter Wolverines on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 78-73 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wolverines. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Tuesday (68), Juan Diego Catholic still had to take the loss.
Juan Diego Catholic lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Tevarii Pecqueux, who scored 19 points. It was the first time this season that Pecqueux scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Luke Meyer, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds.
Dominick Phannolath was his usual excellent self, scoring 29 points along with five rebounds and three steals for Hunter. Phannolath continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Zaquel Cossa was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with five rebounds.
Juan Diego Catholic's defeat dropped their record down to 12-9. As for Hunter, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-13.
Juan Diego Catholic will challenge Kearns at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Kearns is on a three-game streak of home wins, Juan Diego Catholic a four-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. Hunter will take on Cyprus at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hunter knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past six matchups -- so hopefully Cyprus likes a good challenge.
