The St. Mary Tigers couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They took a 56-45 hit to the loss column at the hands of Winnfield on Tuesday. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for St. Mary in their matchups with Winnfield: they've now lost three in a row.
Winnfield was led to victory by Jaylon Jackson and Decavian Duncan. Jackson scored 15 points along with six rebounds, while Duncan scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Duncan has scored at least 25% of Winnfield's points. Damascus Lewis was another key contributor, scoring five points along with nine rebounds and six blocks.
St. Mary's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 0-1. As for Winnfield, they now have a winning record of 6-5.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Mary will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Hornbeck at 5:00 p.m. on January 2, 2024. As for Winnfield, they will head out on the road to face off against Pineville at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Pineville is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games.
