The Montgomery Red Raiders will take on the Mount Union Trojans at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The last three games Montgomery has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Montgomery heads in on the heels of a playoff match on Tuesday. They fell just short of South Williamsport by a score of 8-6. The Red Raiders' loss signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
Briar Persing was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over 5.1 innings while giving up four earned runs off eight hits. Persing was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one double. That double was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Max Furman made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one double. Victor Ottman was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Mount Union made easy work of Bishop McCort on Thursday and carried off an 11-1 win. The Trojans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by six runs or more this season.
Mount Union also got a great performance from Davin Yocum as he tossed six innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Yocum has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Julian Weirich was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Georgie Bilger, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Mount Union always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .543. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April.
Mount Union has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten games. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Montgomery, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-5.
