Softball Recap: Independence's Win on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Nine

Independence came tearing into Friday's contest with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.9 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They never let the Garinger Wildcats get on the board and left with a 16-0 victory. Considering the Patriots have won ten matches by more than nine runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Michaela Williams made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two hits in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sydnee Platt, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Joelle Alexander, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2.

Independence pushed their record up to 14-2 with the win, which was their ninth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Garinger, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-8.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Independence will host Providence at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Patriots' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 11.1 runs per game this season. As for Garinger, they will take on North Mecklenburg at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Vikings have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.09 runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of.
