On Thursday, while it was the Gulf Breeze Dolphins who put the first points on the board, it was the West Florida Jaguars who put up more. Gulf Breeze fell just short of West Florida by a score of 35-32. Gulf Breeze has struggled against West Florida recently, as their contest on Thursday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
When it comes to explaining why Gulf Breeze lost, one person who can't be blamed is Battle Alberson. Despite the final result, he threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown while picking up 7.6 yards per carry. Alberson has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last three times he's played. Gavin Quenneville was in the mix too, providing Gulf Breeze with two touchdowns.
It was another big night for John Nicholas, who rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries, and also threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Nicholas hasn't dropped below three passing touchdowns for five straight games. Marquez Jones was another key contributor, gaining 198 total yards and a touchdown.
Gulf Breeze has yet to win a match on the road this season, leaving them with a 3-7 record. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 2.67 points. As for West Florida, their win bumped their record up to 4-5.
