2A Region 5 recap November 5, 2013
Randolph County moved up to 240 from 267 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 2A Region 5. The Tigers climbed the ranks as a result of besting Cherokee County 38-28.
Montgomery Academy made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 3,817 from 4,859. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 20-10 victory over Trinity Presbyterian last week.
The Eagles' offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Josh Thomas threw for 102 yards and Sam LaPlatney had 42 yards receiving. On the ground Justin Woolfolk contributed 163 yards. Will Sahlie helped Montgomery Academy's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 27 yards.
LaPlatney made the biggest impact on defense this week as Montgomery Academy beat the Wildcats. The 5-foot-9 junior grabbed 2 interceptions.
LaPlatney was the best receiver in the league this week as Anthony McCall's team beat Trinity Presbyterian. LaPlatney tallied 3 receptions for 42 yards. Sahlie helped Montgomery Academy's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 27 yards.
Montgomery Academy's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Eagles feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Thomas has thrown for 1,080 yards and 7 touchdowns this season, while LaPlatney has 19 catches for 527 yards.
LaFayette led the league in scoring this week by notching 54 points on Bullock County.
