Mt. Vernon and Effingham are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2017, but likely not for long. The Rams will head out on the road to square off against the Flaming Hearts at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Mt. Vernon is coming into the game hot, having won their last seven games.
On Friday, Mt. Vernon was able to grind out a solid victory over Massac County, taking the game 8-3.
Taylor DeSmith made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Arwyn Wilkey, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in May of 2025. Another player making a difference was Elaina Schulte, who went 2-for-4 with one home run.
Mt. Vernon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Massac County only posted a batting average of .120.
Meridian typically has all the answers at home, but on Tuesday Effingham proved too difficult a challenge. They came out on top against the Hawks by a score of 9-6.
Natalie Armstrong was excellent, firing off two home runs and four RBI while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. Madilyn Summers also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Mt. Vernon's record now sits at 13-4. As for Effingham, their record is now 11-7.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Mt. Vernon hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Effingham struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 1.3 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Mt. Vernon beat Effingham 10-6 in their previous matchup back in May of 2025. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rams since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
