The Bertie Falcons are still undefeated this season after their match against the Hertford County Bears on Friday, but the Hertford County Bears came as close as anyone has to beating them. Bertie came out on top in a nail-biter against Hertford County and snuck past 59-57. Given Bertie's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 14th, while Hertford County is ranked 126th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Zymiere Dempsey was his usual excellent self, scoring 25 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. He also posted two+ blocks for the first time this season. Another player making a difference was Jah'Kelvin Rascoe, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and six steals.
Bertie's win was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-0. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.1 points per game. As for Hertford County, their loss ended an 18-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 4-2.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Bertie will take on Tarboro at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Tarboro knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matches -- so hopefully Bertie likes a good challenge. As for Hertford County, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Pasquotank County at 7:00 p.m. Hopefully Pasquotank County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Thursday.
