Wausau West is 9-1 against Merrill since January of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. Wausau West scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 72-69 win over Eau Claire North. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Ayla Christensen was her usual excellent self, scoring 26 points along with five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kelly Kray, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Merrill's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. Their rough 64-44 defeat to Marshfield might stick with them for a while. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Merrill has scored all season.
Wausau West is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a massive bump to their 5-9 record this season. As for Merrill, their loss was their third straight at home, which bumped their record down to 8-7.
Wausau West beat Merrill 71-60 in their previous matchup back in December of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Wausau West since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
