The Douglas Bulldogs waltzed into their game on Monday with five straight wins but they left with six. They skirted past Rio Rico 52-50. This was payback for Douglas, who suffered a 62-48 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Douglas to victory, but perhaps none more so than Keyra Espinosa, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and two steals. Scarlette Ruiz was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with five assists and five rebounds.
Rio Rico lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Daiana Hollman, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 19 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Debanny Cota, who scored 17 points along with five assists and four steals.
Even though they lost, Rio Rico smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Douglas only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Douglas is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 23-4 record this season. As for Rio Rico, their defeat dropped their record down to 19-4.
Douglas won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Mica Mountain at 7:00 p.m. on January 30th. Mica Mountain is coming into the contest with six straight victories on the road, so Douglas is out to stop a squad with plenty of momentum. As for Rio Rico, they will square off against Sahuarita at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Rio Rico focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Monday.
