Iona Prep is a perfect 10-0 against Xavier since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Gaels will head out on the road to challenge the Knights at 4:30 p.m. Iona Prep is coming into the contest hot, having won their last seven games.
Iona Prep came out on top against Cardinal Spellman on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run third inning. The Gaels blew past the Pilots 15-5. The Gaels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten matches by seven runs or more this season.
Michael Colon looked comfortable as he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one hit in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Devin Diaz was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and one triple. What's more, he posted three hits, the most he's had since back in March. Another player making a difference was Julian Guzman, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Iona Prep always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .622. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .556 or higher in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, after a string of four wins, Xavier's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They came up short against Salesian, falling 10-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Knights have suffered against the Eagles since May 9, 2018.
Iona Prep pushed their record up to 14-3-1 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.4 runs over those games. As for Xavier, their loss dropped their record down to 8-6.
Iona Prep beat Xavier 6-2 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gaels since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
