Portal has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against the Jenkins County War Eagles at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Portal's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last eight matches.
Last Tuesday, Portal was able to grind out a solid win over McIntosh County Academy, taking the game 57-44. Given Portal's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 33rd, while McIntosh County Academy is ranked 197th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Portal to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kj Hunter, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Hunter scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Amir Jackson, who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and six assists.
Meanwhile, Jenkins County had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They strolled past Montgomery County with points to spare, taking the game 68-50.
Portal pushed their record up to 15-1 with that victory, which was their 21st straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.3 points per game. As for Jenkins County, their victory bumped their record up to 11-2.
Portal beat Jenkins County 61-50 when the teams last played back in February of 2023. Does Portal have another victory up their sleeve, or will Jenkins County turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
