Baseball Recap: Montezuma-Cortez Takes Down Jefferson Academy in a Playoff Battle

Montezuma-Cortez had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They put the hurt on the Jefferson Academy Jaguars with a sharp 9-3 win on Saturday. Considering the Panthers have won 13 matchups by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Connor Rosenbaugh spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on seven hits and racked up ten Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Montezuma-Cortez got a massive performance out of Cory Carver, who went 2-for-4 with two triples and two runs. Those two triples gave Carver a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Samson Lein, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Montezuma-Cortez kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in 11 consecutive contests.

Montezuma-Cortez pushed their record up to 20-4 with the victory, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Jefferson Academy, the defeat snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 6-18 record.

Montezuma-Cortez has already played their next game, an 11-6 victory against Elizabeth on the 17th. Jefferson Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
