It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Matanzas Pirates ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They had just enough and edged Davenport out 62-59. The win was just what Matanzas needed coming off of a 72-49 loss in their prior contest.
Matanzas found their leader in underclassman Henry Robinson Jr., who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 12 rebounds. Robinson Jr. has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last 13 times he's played. Tariq Shakir was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with six assists and three steals.
Matanzas is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a massive bump to their 7-10 record this season. As for Davenport, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-8.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Matanzas on the road again on Wednesday and play against Flagler Palm Coast at 7:30 p.m. on January 17th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Florida (Flagler Palm Coast is ranked 362nd, while Matanzas is ranked 376th). As for Davenport, they will head out on the road to challenge Lake Region at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Lake Region knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven contests -- so hopefully Davenport likes a good challenge.
