Mason Meyer and Gavin Joy did most of the damage at the plate: Meyer went 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI, while Joy got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Meyer is becoming a predictor of Mt. Vernon's success: when he posts at least one home run the team is undefeated (and 3-5 when he doesn't). Tristan Sitton also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Meanwhile, Richmond came into Thursday's contest having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Cambridge City Lincoln a 9-0 shutout on Thursday. With that win, the Red Devils brought their scoring average up to 6.1 runs per game.
Aiden McWhinney made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Richmond let Tyrel Brown and Wyatt Kier run wild. Brown went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Kier went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Those two hits gave Brown a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Zander Juday, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Richmond now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Mt. Vernon, they now have a winning record of 6-5.
Mt. Vernon couldn't quite finish off Richmond when the teams last played back in April of 2024 and fell 2-0. Can the Marauders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
