San Marcos is a perfect 4-0 against Oceanside since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. San Marcos will be taking part in a tournament against Oceanside at 4:00 p.m. San Marcos is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
San Marcos is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Otay Ranch just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell 6-3 to the Mustangs.
San Marcos got a good showing from Charlotte Shelton, who didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. That's the fewest hits Shelton has allowed since March 1st.
On the hitting side, Addie Taufa was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Emma Royko was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Oceanside ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 win over Patrick Henry.
Anuhea Molifua spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on 13 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Irie Filo, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Those two hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Anaiah Filo, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.
Oceanside kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Oceanside has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 4-7 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 10.5 hits in those games compared to only 3.71 in the others. San Marcos' loss dropped their record down to 6-5.
Oceanside's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: San Marcos has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .432. It's a different story for Oceanside, though, as they've only averaged .347. Will they be able to contain San Marcos' hitters?
Everything went San Marcos' way against Oceanside when the teams last played back in April of 2018, as San Marcos made off with a 13-0 victory. Will San Marcos repeat their success, or does Oceanside has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
