Softball Recap: Hutsonville/Palestine Wins Going Away Against Oblong

It was a proper cat-fight when Hutsonville/Palestine faced off against Oblong on Monday. The Tigers put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 12-4 victory. Considering the Tigers have won seven contests by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Hayden Monan made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off ten hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.3 strikeouts per game. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-5 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Lily Holcomb was a standout: she went 4-for-5 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Brynn Griffin was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs and one double.

Hutsonville/Palestine kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. They got six more hits than Oblong's also-impressive total of 11.

Hutsonville/Palestine has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 8.4 runs. As for Oblong, they dropped their record down to 3-5 with the loss, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hutsonville/Palestine will square off against St. Anthony at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Tigers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bulldogs have averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season. As for Oblong, they will challenge Tri-County [Kansas/Shiloh/Oakland] at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Titans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.2 runs per game on average), something the Panthers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
