WPIAL A Eastern recap October 22, 2013
North Catholic extended the longest winning streak in WPIAL A Eastern this week by beating Neshannock, 21-14. The win marks eighth in a row for the the Trojans.
Northgate scaled the state rankings by moving to 476 from 511 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Flames climbed the ranks as a result of beating Springdale 28-14.
Jesse Zelonka was a passing and rushing force as Apollo Ridge beat Riverview. He completed 6 passes for 116 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 238 yards. Zelonka's favorite target this week was Alex Smith, who caught 3 passes for 82 yards.
Zelonka was a beast in the backfield as the Vikings bested the Raiders.
Alex Lasslo put up the best numbers through the air as West Shamokin topped Leechburg. He finished with 4 completions for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Apollo Ridge's Zelonka and Smith led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-0 quarterback Zelonka has thrown for 1,003 yards this season, while Smith has 21 catches for 418 yards. Riverview's Keir Barber leads the league in rushing yards with 817.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when John Skiba's team's Smith goes up against the Wolves' Andrew Wingard.
Next week's game between the Vikings and West Shamokin will feature an aerial matchup as Zelonka tests his arm against Wingard's defensive ability.
An important game coming up in WPIAL A Eastern this week will be when Apollo Ridge takes on Jon McCullough's team. At the moment, the Vikings are in fourth, while the Wolves are in third.
The league will see a high scoring game when Apollo Ridge and West Shamokin face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Vikings comes in having scored 318 this season, while the Wolves have scored 221. Apollo Ridge scored 41 points last week as it beat the Raiders.
Wilkinsburg lost to Avonworth 41-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
