Baseball Game Preview: Weslaco Panthers vs. Edinburg North Cougars

Weslaco is 9-1 against Edinburg North since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Weslaco Panthers challenge Edinburg North Cougars at 7:00 p.m. Weslaco will be strutting in after a win while Edinburg North will be coming in after a loss.

Weslaco took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They walked away with an 8-4 victory over La Joya.

Diego Castillo was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed 6.2 innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. Castillo was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Isaiah Garza, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Avel Salinas also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Weslaco kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Edinburg North was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took an 11-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of Economedes. Cougars fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Jaguars since on Saturday.

Weslaco's win was their ninth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-6-1. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.2 runs over those games. As for Edinburg North, their loss dropped their record down to 2-18.

Weslaco beat Edinburg North 5-1 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Does Weslaco have another victory up their sleeve, or will Edinburg North turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
