Union Catholic and Westfield are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Vikings will take on the Blue Devils at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
Union Catholic fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Hunterdon Central on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Red Devils by a score of 5-3. The Vikings have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Lenny Peguero was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits.
On the hitting side, Brayden Morrison made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Brian McCabe was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
The scorekeeper got an easy start on Saturday as neither Westfield nor Middlesex made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Blue Devils narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Bluejays 2-0. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Blue Devils as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.
Ian Dickey tossed a big game, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits over six innings pitched. He also allowed no hits, which is notable because Westfield is undefeated when he allows at most three hits, but 5-7 otherwise.
At the plate, Westfield saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Anthony Narciso, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI. That RBI marked the first that Narciso has brought in this season.
Union Catholic's loss dropped their record down to 11-8-1. As for Westfield, they now have a winning record of 8-7.
Union Catholic skirted past Westfield 7-6 in their previous meeting back in May of 2025. Do the Vikings have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Blue Devils turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
