Brawley is 9-0 against Calexico since October of 2014, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Brawley Wildcats will look to defend their home field against the Calexico Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. Brawley will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak (dating back to last season) alive.
Last Friday, everything went Brawley's way against Imperial as Brawley made off with a 42-16 victory. The result was nothing new for Brawley, who have now won five games by 26 points or more so far this season.
Matthew Gutierrez continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, throwing for 125 yards and three touchdowns, while also punching in two touchdowns on the ground. Another player making a difference was Brandon Porras, who gained 99 total yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Calexico's three-game losing streak came to an end on Friday. They came out on top against Southwest EC by a score of 21-8.
Calexico's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Leo Canchola led the charge by rushing for 103 yards on only ten carries. Roberto Montejano was another key contributor, throwing for 91 yards and two touchdowns on only six passes.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Southwest EC to a paltry 218 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Calexico's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out three times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Marlon Sanchez and his two sacks.
Their wins bumped Brawley to 7-1 and Calexico to 5-3.
Thursday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Brawley has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 177.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Calexico struggles in that department as they've been averaging 164.1 per game. It's looking like Thursday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for Brawley against Calexico in their previous meeting back in October of 2022 as the team secured a 42-8 victory. Does Brawley have another victory up their sleeve, or will Calexico turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
