The Cumberland Dukes are taking a road trip to take on the Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot Knights at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Cumberland has given up an average of 14.5 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Cumberland's last matchup with Nottoway could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's game on Thursday. The Dukes came up short against the Cougars, falling 12-5. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Ayden Brodie made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Brett Dalton, who scored two runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot made easy work of Fuqua on Thursday and carried off a 19-1 win. The Knights haven't had any issues with the Falcons recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.
Matthew Fountain was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run over 4.2 innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot is 3-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 2-7 otherwise. Fountain was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Jon Michael Lee was a standout: he went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. Taylor Hamner was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-5.
Cumberland's defeat dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot, their record is now 5-8.
Cumberland suffered a grim 12-1 defeat to Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Can the Dukes avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
