5A Region I District 1 recap October 8, 2013
Fans got a thrill when Orlando Garcia and Isak Washington connected against Bel Air. The connection was good for 97 yards, the longest such play in 5A Region I District 1 this season.
Coronado scaled the state rankings by moving to 117 from 159 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Thunderbirds were able to move up by besting Franklin 37-21.
Americas's dynamic duo of Garcia and Washington proved tough for the Highlanders to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Garcia threw for 426 yards and 5 touchdowns and Washington had 284 yards receiving. Q Drennan helped Americas' passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 103 yards.
He was 14-17 with 0 interceptions.
Bobby Chacon was a beast in the backfield as Coronado bested the Cougars.
Washington had a great week catching the football as the Trail Blazers topped Bel Air. He caught 7 passes for 284 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Franklin's Cameron Candelaria and Aaron Smith have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-2 quarterback Candelaria has thrown for 1,574 yards this season, while Smith has 22 catches for 597 yards. Lederrick Wilson from El Dorado leads the league in rushing with 910 yards.
Wilson of the the Aztecs is only 90 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 110 carries Wilson has accumulated 910 yard this year.
A big matchup in 5A Region I District 1 this week will be when Montwood takes on Americas. As it stands, the Rams are in second, while Patrick Melton's team is in fourth.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Montwood takes on the Trail Blazers. Chuck Veliz's team has allowed 127 points this season, while Americas has given up 117. The Rams allowed 21 points last week as they beat El Dorado.
The Trail Blazers were the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fourth in the league. Americas vanquished Tony Cervantes' team 63-3 earlier in the week.
