The Firelands Falcons will challenge the Black River Pirates at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Firelands is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.1 runs per game this season.
Firelands is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 19 runs on Wednesday, they were much more limited against North Ridgeville on Thursday. They lost 10-2 to the Rangers. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Falcons have suffered since April 9th.
Firelands saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Paige Coggins, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Black River made easy work of Oberlin on Thursday and carried off a 17-1 win. The Pirates might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten contests by six runs or more this season.
Mallory Eckert made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Eckert was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Black River got a massive performance out of Jenna Dieter, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Madelyn Stief was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Black River always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .719. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Oberlin only posted an OBP of .455.
Black River has been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for Firelands, they now have a losing record of 8-9.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Firelands has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .464. However, it's not like Black River struggles in that department as they've averaged .477. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
