Northampton and Chicopee Comp are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Blue Devils will head out to face off against the Colts at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Northampton took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They blew past Pope Francis Prep 9-2.
Greta Lepore spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits.
On the hitting side, Avery Hicks was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Rosie Simmons also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, Chicopee Comp entered their tilt with Southwick Regional on Tuesday with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. They were the clear victors by a 19-4 margin over the Rams. That's two games straight that the Colts have won by exactly 15 runs.
Ashlyn Warwick was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Warwick was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Chicopee Comp got a massive performance out of Arianna Bird, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Olivia Cruz, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
Chicopee Comp always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .647. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April.
Northampton's record now sits at 11-5. As for Chicopee Comp, their record is now 8-9.
Chicopee Comp's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Northampton has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.2 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Chicopee Comp, though, as they've been averaging only 3.9 strikeouts. Will Northampton keep running through batters, or will the Colts buck the trend?
Northampton might still be hurting after the 15-2 loss they got from Chicopee Comp in their previous meeting back in May of 2023. Can the Blue Devils avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
