The Grand Canyon Phantoms suffered their biggest defeat since December 28, 2023 on Tuesday. They were dealt a 66-32 defeat at the hands of St. Michael. While losing is never fun, Grand Canyon can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 262nd, while St. Michael is ranked 111th).
Grand Canyon's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jordyn Wadsworth, who scored five points along with nine rebounds. Wadsworth has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last 18 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Amelia Walls, who scored six points along with eight rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Grand Canyon and nudges their season record down to 8-13. As for St. Michael, the victory (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 16-9.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Grand Canyon won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Ash Fork at 4:30 p.m. on January 24th. As for St. Michael, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Basis at 5:30 p.m. Basis comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 21 points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
