The Axtell Longhorns put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past Cross Roads 46-0 on the road. Given Axtell's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 403rd, while Cross Roads is ranked 1053rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Axtell to victory were Levi Leathers and Tyson Michel. Leathers threw for 112 yards and two touchdowns while completing 87.5% of his passes, while Michel rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 12.2 yards per carry. Leathers was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 56 yards.
Axtell's victory was their eighth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 9-0. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-9 Hubbard and 2-6 Moody (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 40.3% over those games). As for Cross Roads, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-5.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Axtell will take on Itasca at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Itasca is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune. As for Cross Roads, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Kerens at 7:00 p.m.
