Magee is a perfect 3-0 against Port Gibson since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Trojans will host the Blue Waves at 6:00 p.m. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Magee has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Port Gibson will arrive with four straight wins.
Magee lost 12-5 to North Forrest on Saturday.
Carson Harper was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles and two runs.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between Port Gibson and Hazlehurst, and Port Gibson kept the tradition alive. The Blue Waves put the hurt on the Indians with a sharp 15-1 victory on Saturday. The Blue Waves might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
Jomarion Washington and Michael Evans were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Washington tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Evans struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Port Gibson is 4-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-9 otherwise. At the plate, Washington scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3, while Evans scored two runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-3. Evans has been hot recently, having posted three or more stolen bases the last four times he's played.
In other batting news, KeJaiveyin Watson was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing six bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Those six stolen bases gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Braylin Carter, who scored three runs and stole four bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
Port Gibson always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .679. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .607 or higher in three consecutive games.
Port Gibson's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-10. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Magee, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-9.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Magee has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .453. However, it's not like Port Gibson struggles in that department as they've averaged .515. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Magee's way against Port Gibson in their previous matchup back in April of 2015, as Magee made off with a 17-2 win. Will the Trojans repeat their success, or do the Blue Waves have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
