Softball Recap: Highlands Wins Going Away Against Russell

The Highlands Bluebirds made easy work of the Russell Red Devils on Monday and carried off a 12-5 win.

Kaitlyn Dixon made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Payton Brown, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Bailee Class also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Highlands kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in three consecutive matchups.

Highlands is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-3-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. Russell now has a losing record of 3-4.

Looking ahead, Highlands will be playing in front of their home fans against Rowan County at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday. As for Russell, they will face off against St. Francis at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
