Olive Branch, Miss., offensive lineman Shon Coleman began chemotherapy treatments over the weekend.

Shon Coleman
, an Auburn football signee who starred on the offensive line at
Olive Branch (Miss.)
, was recently diagnosed with leukemia.
According to
The
Commercial Appeal
, the 6-foot-7, 285-pound Coleman has
acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Late last week, a lump removed from his head was found to be malignant and he began chemotherapy treatments over the weekend.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society website describes ALL as a blood cancer that is the most common form of leukemia in children under 15. With treatment, it is considered very treatable.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Shon,” Olive Branch athletic director Pete Cordelli told
The
Commercial Appeal
. “This is a great kid who does all the right things. We’re positive he’ll come out of this OK.”

Coleman enjoyed an outstanding senior season in 2009, elevating his status as a recruit. Despite several schools' attempts to sway Coleman away from the Tigers, he followed through on his commitment to Auburn and signed Feb. 3, helping complete one of the nation's top recruiting classes which also features running back
Mike Dyer
and fellow offensive lineman
Eric Mack
.
With Coleman helping to anchor the line, Olive Branch went 10-3 last fall. The Conquistadors were eliminated from the 6A state playoffs by
Madison Central (Madison, Miss.)
.
